New Surma font

The New Surma font is a True Type font for use with Windows applications on a PC. We hope eventually to have a Macintosh version also. The font has been designed for printing the Sylheti language in its own Siloti Nagri script, and is based on previous Siloti Nagri typefaces (as shown on the printed Sylheti page) and a range of manuscript samples (see examples in Sylheti Literature).

If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you can view the Users Guide to the New Surma font (185 kB), which contains a full description of each character, and instructions on how to install the font on your computer. A free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader can be obtained from Adobe.

The New Surma font can be obtained, free, by following the procedure for downloading and installation given below.

If you want to use the font in Windows applications to create your own Siloti Nagri documents, you will need to use the Tavultesoft Keyboard Manager (KeyMan). This is produced by Tavultesoft and can also be downloaded here following the steps given below.

Steps to download font

  1. Download file "siloti.exe" by clicking here.
  2. Be sure to save it in a new directory/folder, eg c:\download
  3. The file siloti.exe is a self-extracting archive. Use File Manager or Explorer to locate the file, then double-click on it in the directory window. This will extract the files to the directory you choose - it may be easiest to choose the same directory, ie c:\download in the example. You will receive the files:
    • newsurma.ttf (True Type font file)
    • fontinfo.pdf (Users Guide to the New Surma Font, as described above)
    • fontinfo.doc (Word 6 version of the Users Guide)
    • siloti.kmn, siloti0.bmp and siloti1.bmp (needed for use with KeyMan - see below)
  4. Install the font by opening the Control Panel, clicking on "Fonts", then following the procedure to install new fonts - you will need to select the newsurma.ttf font file from the directory where you downloaded the file.
  5. Check that the font is installed by viewing the Word document "fontinfo.doc".

Steps to download KeyMan

  1. Download file "KEYMAN32.exe" by clicking here.
  2. Save it in a new directory/folder, eg c:\download
  3. The file KEYMAN32.exe is a self-extracting archive. Use File Manager or Explorer to locate the file, then double-click on it in the directory window. This will extract the files to the directory you choose - it may be easiest to choose the same directory, ie c:\download in the example.
  4. Using File Manager or Explorer, locate the extracted files. Install KeyMan using its setup program: locate the file SETUP.exe and double-click on it. Choose the directory to install to, and select the keyboard from the list that you wish to be loaded automatically when KeyMan starts. (Note that it will be easier to start using KeyMan if you select at least one keyboard during installation.) Follow instructions until Setup is finished.
  5. Copy the files siloti.kmn, siloti0.bmp and siloti1.bmp from the directory where you downloaded the font files into the directory where KeyMan has been installed.
  6. When you start using KeyMan you can choose to load the Siloti-Nagri keyboard from the "options" box. More information can be found in the Users Guide to the New Surma font, as above.
  7. Further information on using KeyMan can be found in the Users Guide and Reference, which is contained in file "keyman32.doc" in the KeyMan folder/directory after installation.
  8. Note that a later version of KeyMan may be obtained from Tavultesoft. If you wish to use this version, you will need to contact STAR for updated files for the Siloti Nagri keyboard.
