page 13 from line 16:

A plea from the Editor

Listen, faithful brethren, to my plea,
countless people want to know Nagri.
Their heart's desire is to learn,
they search for a primer and do not find one.
Though Sylheti Nagri is so easy,
clever people find it a struggle to learn.
Seeing this I thought to myself,
they would find it easy if they had a primer.

page 14

When I saw the zeal in people's hearts,
I made the effort to help them.
If I wrote out all the letters systematically,
they could learn in one day with God's help.
I included the Bengali alphabet,
for the sake of those who know Bengali.
They can teach themselves using the Bengali letters,
though having a teacher would be helpful.
I have written out ballads and songs,
reading Doikhura's songs will gladden the heart.
Having made this plea I come to the end,
this Sylheti Nagri book is called 'Pohela Kitab'.
If the faithful appreciate reading it,
my effort will have been successful and my heart content,
I close in the hope that the faithful will kindly
offer fervent prayers for me for the Day of Judgement.
Muhammed Abdul Lotif is this poor man's name,
my home is situated inside Sylhet Town.
Putting my hands together I now offer to all,
a thousand blessings in the service of the faithful.
